YES, one needs to be honest with themselves, and decide they are different, rather than being "in
denial"
Personally, to me it doesn't matter what the external teacher says, it's what you personally
believe.
What I mean is that once I switched to believing that "wrong tones" just meant "wrong word",
instead of "same word + different tones", my memory of correct pronunciation improved almost
overnight.
I believe that IF you tell yourself it's the "same word, but different tones" (same as saying
"same syllable/sound structure/sounds like/etc") then your brain will do it's very best to keep
all those "same word" constucts together, with memory, association, etc.
We don't want that!
