I speak English & Chinese (studied Mandarin a long time ago, & I speak Cantonese), studied some
Spanish, studied a little Modern Greek (I can say "I have no money"), Latin[find Latin boring,

olympics...

i'll also be in beijing to study there although i will be studying in university of international

hey guys!

it's getting hot here in beijing, so those who are coming for the summer course, take note of
this: if turning into a peking roast duck is not part of your to-do list, make sure you're ready
with sunblock, cotton tees, flipflops and nalgene bottles. they can be real lifesavers.

too bad i'm not gonna be able to meet you guys since i'm going home for summer break. i'll be back
in beijing by the end of august for the fall term.

I'm going in September for the 12 week 30-hour course. I'll probably be in the A class as I just
started learning a month ago or so. Does anybody know the structure of the classes on a day to day
basis? Is it pin-yin, writing etc? I really haven't found anything yet so any help is greatly

哪裡 in itself means 'where' (where would you get the idea that my Chinese is good); 哪里 in
traditional means something like 'which village', which makes no sense at all as far as I can
tell. I'd say it's a typo.

When typing (in Taiwan, in traditional), my input system gives me either 哪裡 or 那裡 when I
type nali, never 哪里.

When searching for 哪里 in the .tw domain, the first twenty results are split between sites that
are simplified anyway, and forums and blogs and such things, that are more prone to typos than an
official website.

哪里哪里 = 哪裡哪裡 = 哪裏哪裏. All are same thing. next to it is :

(您)过奖了. (literally "you have over praised me)

I have also been hearing more and more young people who simply respond by saying 还好吧. Like
if you say you do such and such really well, they will just make the neutral comment 还好吧.
Kind of reaching a middle ground between the west of just accepting the compliment and the
older/traditionals that would flat out deny the compliment.

I am finishing up my Masters in ESL and am planning to go to China in a year to teach English long
term. I have several text books already, which I've obtained from my courses and several more I
would like to purchase.

I am wondering how easy it is to find and order good quality English text books in China. Are
English textbooks hard to come by? Are they easy to come by, but rather expensive?

I am interested in some more specific topics, such as discourse analysis and pragmatics and am not
sure how difficult they would be to find. It is not an issue to order them now, but I am trying to
avoid paying unnecessary shipping costs.

I realize that the school would likely have their own textbooks. Mainly, the books I speak of are
for personal reference.

Hi Jfranco,

Good quality ESL books are very difficult to find here. Partly this is due to the general Chinese
education teaching style which is memorize and recite versus using the language in a meaningful
way. Also almost all the classes teach the students in preparation for the tests. There are no
oral English tests until Univerisity that I am aware of , so speaking is not something stressed,
but it something they often get the foreign teachers to teach.

On books depending on your age group, I would get books with looks of pictures, activities,
dialogues and games. The best are ones that say Photocopiable mmaterial provided. Most Schools
won't agree to buy the books, but will have a copy machine and will let you make as many copies as
you like.

The books you will find are 3 Read look listen for younger kids,
New Oriental (plagiarized from tests) books
and New Concept English (mostly reading comprehension)

Personally I like the ESL books put out by Penguin (Pair Work 1 , by Peter Watcyn-Jones an Deirdre
Howard-Williams.

The version I have was published 2002 by Penguin Books and is quite good.

Good luck with your search and I would bring as many books and materials as your Suitcase weight
allowance lets you.

English text books are very easy to come by. Most book shops will have a large section devoted to
English study. Whither you think they are good quality or not is debatable, but the quantity
available is high and the prices are low.

If there's a particular brand or title that you would be bringing, post the name here and we can
tell you if it is in the local shops or not.

Personally, I use Interchange form Cambridge, New Concept English form Longman and Side by Side
which is also form Longman. I also have several books covering business English and some others
for particular exams.

Rather than student materials, I think you would get more value form filling you bag with teacher
materials; things like a good newspaper, wallmaps (in English) of the world and of individual
countries, restaurant menus, flash cards and other props that you may use in class.

I've been trying to find English 'translations' of traditional Chinese ghost stories - especially
those about beautiful 'fox' ghosts that lure handsome heros to their doom - on the web but can't
seem to find any. I think I am lookig inteh wrong places.

A great writer of strange stories is Pu Songling / P'u Sung-ling and his work Liaozhai Zhiyi /
Liao-chai chih-i is very famous (I am not familiar with the stories, though).

This is Lafcadio Hearn's book "Some Chinese Ghosts" which he wrote in the late nineteenth century.
Hearn lived in Japan for many years right after the country opened up to westernization, primarily
wrote about Japan, and he is still a popular figure there, but he put out some items on Chinese
legends as well. His material is still a good read, as I think you'll discover if you look at this
book.

YES, one needs to be honest with themselves, and decide they are different, rather than being "in
denial"

Personally, to me it doesn't matter what the external teacher says, it's what you personally
believe.

What I mean is that once I switched to believing that "wrong tones" just meant "wrong word",
instead of "same word + different tones", my memory of correct pronunciation improved almost
overnight.

I believe that IF you tell yourself it's the "same word, but different tones" (same as saying
"same syllable/sound structure/sounds like/etc") then your brain will do it's very best to keep
all those "same word" constucts together, with memory, association, etc.

We don't want that!

According to this site, these modern Japanese and Korean names are the traditional Chinese names
for names of the week:

There are, at least 3 methods to talk about weekdays in Chinese (星期一..., 礼拜一...,
周一). This is the 4th, the Japanese/Korean way, the Japanese/Korean pronunciation is given in
square brackets, "ō" is a long "o", not the 1st tone "o":

月耀/曜日 Yuèyàorì Monday, Japanese: [Getsuyōbi], Korean: 월요일 [Woryoil]
火曜日 Huǒyàorì Tuesday, Japanese: [Kayōbi], Korean: 화요일 [Hwayoil]
水曜日 Shuǐyàorì Wednesday, Japanese: [Suiyōbi], Korean: 수요일 [Suyoil]
木曜日 Mùyàorì Thursday, Japanese: [Mokuyōbi], Korean: 목요일 [Mogyoil]
金曜日 Jīnyàorì Friday, Japanese: [Kin'yōbi], Korean: 금요일 [Geumyoil]
土曜日 Tǔyàorì Saturday, Japanese: [Doyōbi], Korean: 토요일 [Toyoil]
日曜日 Rìyàorì Sunday, Japanese: [Nichiyōbi], Korean: 일요일 [Iryoil]

These are not based on numbers but on 月 (moon), 火 (fire), 水 (water), 木 (tree), 金 (gold),
土 (earth), 日 (sun).

I wonder why ABC dictionary has entries for Japanese names of the week. Do these words have any
usage in the Chinese culture (mainland, Taiwan, etc.) ? 耀 is variant of 曜, which is not used
in Japanese.

Some other site said these were abandoned early in the 20th century. (My guess is, there was some
revival in Taiwan later in the 20th century).

Do Chinese people understand, ever use these words? Were they used in the old literature?

Various sources point to the seven day week originated in ancient Babylonia or Sumer. It has been
suggested that a seven day week might be much older. The seven day planetary week originated in
Hellenistic Egypt.

In any event, a seven day week based on heavenly luminaries eventually diffused both East and
West, to the Romans via the Greeks, and to the Japanese via Manicheans, Indians and Chinese.

Is it possible for this to be set as a board preference rather than as a cookie? I notice that
every time I use a new computer I have to set the language to Chinese, as it defaults to US. Which
would be ok, but the University computers (not that I use them often, admittedly) don't store
cookies, and thus I'd have to change it each and every time...

Not currently. There's a new version of Vbulletin coming up, which may do that, I'm not sure.

I did think about that, but I think that still works on cookies. Could be wrong though . . .

Nope, I tested it by clearing all cookies in Safari. Setting the value in Firefox, and then loggin
in via Safari. The interface correctly switched to Chinese when logged in. One thing to note
though is that if set, the cookie will override the setting here.

Right enough, now I check there's a language field in the user table on the database. It's not
accessible via the admin panel so I'd assumed it wasn't there.

Hmm, not sure what Admin panel you're looking at, but on mine, the language option is right there
in User Manager, located in the Profile just below Email, and just above User Title

access users webcams and make their computers crash . . .

I'm looking for a recipe for chinese cream cakes. The one they use for birthdays and are sold in
chinese bakeries. It is the very light cake accented with fresh fruit (with peaches, kiwi, melon &
strawberries) and whipped cream. I have scoured the net and have found NO recipes that sound like
the cake I want to make, and have only found postings by other people looking for the same
recipe!! Our family usually goes to ChinaTown in Boston when we buy them, but I want to learn to
make my own so we can save on trips to the city...In addition, the Chinese basker clain little
English and don't want to share the recipe...

Do you know how to make these cakes? These are NOT the steamed sponged cakes. I REPEAT, this is
NOT the steamed sponge cake. I need a recipe for this baked cake and the the cream they use...I
have heard the cream is not really cream but some kind of fake substitute..But so yummy anyway!! I
included a link to a picture of one below....

Please help with a full recipe!!! This pursuit has been akin to looking for the holy grail!

Hi,

Were you ever able to find a recipe? I have been looking for one myself and came across these two.
I haven't tried them out yet, so I don't know how they taste. They're pretty similar in
ingredients.

CHINESE SPONGE CAKE
(Gai Don Go)

1 1/2 c. cake flour, sifted
9 eggs, separated
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. water
1/4 c. oil
1 tsp. vanilla

Beat egg whites until slightly foamy. Add 1/2 teaspoon cream of
tartar. Beat again till stiff. Sift together flour, baking powder
and sugar. Add to egg yolks; add water, oil and vanilla and beat
until creamy. Pour the mixture over egg whites gently and fold
until well-blended.

If using a 9 x 13 pan, bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes.
If using a tube pan, bake 35-40 minutes, inverting tube pan upside
down while cooling.

Serve with fruit topping and whipped cream.

Chinese sponge cake

1 c Softasilk flour (cake flour)
1 c sugar
6 eggs, separated
1 ts vanilla
1/4 c cold water
1/2 ts salt
1/2 ts cream of tartar
Preheat oven to 325. Beat egg yolk and sugar till creamy. Stir in vanilla. Add flour and water
alternately till mixed well. In a spearate bowl, beat egg white till foamy. Add salt and cream of
tartar. Beat until stiff peak. Fold egg white into batter in batches. Pour into ungreased angel
food cake pan. Bake until toothpick comes out clean, about 50 minutes. Turn upside-down to cool.
Because there's no oil in the cake, it does stick to the pan. Just use a knife to careful go
around the pan. It helps if you use a pan that has a removable bottom.

thanks! I never did come across a comparable recipe..I always thought the (Gai Don Go)
cake was the steamed version which is not what I was looking for..It's amazing how such a simple
cake recipe has managed to be eluded! They are so popular among other asian cultures here but no

The title : should be 穩居 not 陰居

1. 穩居 - stay in a stable position (i.e. no other brands can take Nokia's place)

2. 代工 - I think it is "to manufacture on behalf of ...". I know there is a term for it but
cannot recall it. PS - looks like it is OEM.

3. 供新興市場銷售 - it is not 供新, it is 供 (to provide) 新興市場 (emerging / new
markets) 銷售 (sale) - to provide cdma phones for sale in emerging markets
