Chinanews, Guiyang, June 21 - The moon-orbiting project, the first phase
of China's moon probe program officially approved and initiated in 2004,
is progressing smoothly and the first moon orbiter will be launched as
planned in 2007, according to a scientist participating in China's moon
probe program. Ouyang Ziyuan, chief scientist of China's moon probe
program, revealed the information at a symposium held in Guiyang City.
Ouyang said that the orbiter will accomplish four scientific tasks for
China's moon orbiting project, namely, provide 3D images of the moon's
surface, probe into the distribution of 14 useful elements on the moon,
estimate the thickness of soil on the whole moon through studying
microwave characteristics of the moon's surface, and monitor the space
environment between the moon and the earth 400,000 km away from the earth.
Different systems of China's moon exploration and related departments are
busy working for the above four tasks of lunar probe. After a few years
of efforts, the moon probe program is proceeding favorably at present.
Various probing instruments which will be installed on the satellite have
already been delivered.
