China calls for recognition of full market economy status
www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-17 16:20:22
Chinanews, Beijing, May 17 (By Yu Lan) - Several senior Chinese officials
expressed on different occasions in the past few days the hope that the
EU and the US recognize China's full market economy status as soon as
possible.
On Tuesday, an official of the Bureau of Fair Trade for Imports and
Exports under China's Ministry of Commerce commented on the US
government's rejection of the application for market economy status
submitted by China's stationery enterprises, claiming it was
inappropriate and unfair for the US to make such a decision.
This official pointed out that that after over twenty years of reform and
opening to the outside world, China has constructed an integrated market
economic system, a fact that has been acknowledged by many countries. He
emphasized that the US should face up to the achievements of China's
market economy, handle applications from Chinese enterprises in an
objective and fair manner, and treat Chinese enterprises fairly in
anti-dumping investigations.
When meeting with European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services
Charlie McCreevy in Beijing on May 15, Chinese Commerce Minister Bo Xilai
said he hoped the EU would face up to the fact that China is constantly
improving its market economy system and recognize China's full market
economy status as soon as possible.
During his meeting with Charlie McCreevy, Bo expressed China's stand on
the issue that China-made footwear suffered from EU anti-dumping
measures. He pointed out that since China's footwear manufacturing and
operation have become fully marketized, the EU's refusal to grant market
economy status to China's footwear enterprises did not conform to facts
and was an obvious sign of trade protectionism.
When participating in the second round of Sino-EU financial dialogues on
Tuesday, Zhu Guangyao, director of the International Department under the
Ministry of Finance, explicitly expressed the hope that the EU would
acknowledge China's full market economy status as soon as possible. He
said this will inject new vigor into further development of the strategic
partnership between China and the EU.
