Breakthrough in China's oil extraction tech

Chinanews, Jan. 25 - At the acceptance meeting for the Shengli Oilfield
oil sulfonate demonstration project held in Beijing recently, the China
Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec) announced that after five years of
research and development, China has achieved significant breakthroughs in
its oil extraction technology. Based on the tests, this technology could
increase the recovery rate of crude oil by more than 20% for most of
China's oilfields. The increase in crude oil would be equivalent to half
of the total output in these oilfields in the past fifty years.
The accepted oil sulfonate demonstration project is a high-tech
industrialization project which was handed over to Sinopec by the
National Development and Reform Commission. The Shengli Oilfield
Administration Bureau, which oversees China's second largest oilfield
that is located in Shandong's Dongying, was responsible for the concrete
tasks of tackling the critical scientific and technological issues and
developing the project.
The project was officially put into operation on March 10, 2004, with an
annual production capacity of 20,000 tons. According to test simulation
results from the laboratory, this unique technology allows the production
of crude oil from a ton of oil sulfonate to be increased by more than 130
tons and the recovery rate of high-permeability oilfields to be increased
by 20% to 30%. Based on industrial tests at the Shengli Oilfield, the
daily output of each of its ten oil wells is increased by an average of
15 tons. The current output is four times the output prior to the use of
this technology.
Experts who attended the project acceptance meeting believed that the
technology is mature and reliable, while the techniques are reasonable
and easy to use. It complies with the most advanced international
standards. Through using this technology, the recovery rates of most of
China's oilfields, such as Daqing, Shengli, Liaohe and Huabei, will
increase by huge margins.
