Qinghai-Tibet railway runs safely for a year
www.chinanews.cn 2007-07-12 15:52:09
Chinanews, Beijing, July 12 C A year ago, the Qinghai-Tibet railway,
also called the miraculous sky road, was put into operation. Chinese
people were excited about the news. Now, a year has passed. This sky
road has been operating safely for a whole year, experiencing the
changes of the seasons, and the transportation booms occurring during the
Spring Festival and the May Day holidays. During its operation, the
railway line has no records of accidents or human casualties. No
passengers or crew members have died of altitude sickness, the People's
Daily reported.
The Qinghai-Tibet railway was built at an average altitude of 4,000
meters, with 5,072 meters at its highest point. The high altitude, cold
weather, and lack of oxygen posed a challenge to the construction of the
railway as well as the hygiene work on the train after the construction
was completed.
In order to make sure that every passenger on the train can get timely
and effective medical services when they need, the railway department has
installed some medical equipment on the train. Medical staff are
allocated to work aboard and emergency handling schemes are in place.
On June 12-14, Vice Minister of Railways Chen Xiaohong led a team to
Tibet to check the hygiene work on the Qinghai-Tibet railway. After the
inspection, the team concluded that the medical work quality on the train
had reached the internationally advanced standards: no staff had died of
altitude sickness, no plague had occurred on the train and all sick
passengers could get timely medical services.
Ecological environment in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau remains in a primeval
state, which might be easily destroyed by human construction activities.
The plateau is the source of the Yellow River, Yangtze River, Lancang
River, Nu River, and Yarlongzangbo River. It is also the natural habitat
of a lot of endangered animal species, such as Tibetan antelopes and
Tibetan wild asses. The Qinghai-Tibet railway is built in a region where
these animals frequently appear. In order to prevent these animals from
being hurt by the passing trains, railway builders set up special animal
passageways at 33 places along the railway. Fences, warning signs and
devices that direct animals how to pass are also built in these places.
According to related information, from 2004 to 2006 more and more wild
animals tended to pass the railway zone through these animal passageways.
Tibetan antelopes have already become familiar with these newly built
man-made passageways. During the migration season, they tend to use these
passageways to run through the railway area.
The 33 animal passageways have played an important role in protecting the
animals and helping them to live together in peace, according to a report
released by the Environmental Projects Assessing Center at the State
Environmental Protection Administration.
