Chinese School - Money can buy service but never remembrance

Opinion / Raymond Zhou

Money can buy service but never remembrance
By Raymond Zhou (China Daily)
Updated: 2006-04-08 07:20

Wednesday was Qingming Festival, or Tomb-Sweeping Day, when people pay
homage to their deceased family members.

The ideal weather for this day, as sanctified in an ancient poem, is a
drizzle, which would on one hand compliment the solemnity of the occasion
and on the other hand eliminate fire hazards.

The latest addition to this custom is a paid service that lets others,
presumably professionals, take care of all the incense burning and tomb
sweeping for you.

The fee is not unreasonable ---- about 200-300 yuan (US$25-38) ---- and
as seen on TV news, a group of four people, properly dressed in dark
suits, pray in front of a designated tombstone, and in case you fear a
scam, videotape the whole process and e-mail it to the client.

Everything seems to be prim and proper, except that there is no sense in
the whole thing.

Sending a stranger to meditate at a tombstone is fundamentally different
from sending a nurse to take care of an ailing parent.

In the first case, lighting up candles and placing flowers are outward
manifestations of one's remembrance of a loved one who is no longer with
them. The gestures are all symbolic.

If one is unable to make the trip to the site, it doesn't mean one misses
his or her dear departed any less.

Asking a relative or a close friend to go in your stead makes sense, but
asking a total stranger is a little preposterous.

It's somewhat like attending a church service: If you're religious, you
may go or not go, depending on your time schedule and a thousand other
things that prompt or prevent you from attending.

But it would be hypocritical to hire someone to go in your name, wouldn't
it? It's your soul that's at stake, after all.

The incident reported in the news happened in Shanghai, like all new and
newsworthy business models, is quickly being copied in other cities.

Is it a sign of commercialization running amok?

We are so busy making money that we'll hire professionals to do the
memorial ritual for us. What's next? Shall we hire help to go on a date
for us? They'll surely be more eloquent and charming than we are because
they'll be selected from a large pool of talented and trained individuals.

Others might argue that some people live far away from where their
ancestors are buried, and feel the deceased in the other world would know
and be sad if nobody showed up at their tombstones.

Well, if their spirits were alive, how would they feel when they see
total strangers come for visit? It wouldn't be better than when we open
our doors and find salespeople.

That reminds me of the story of college students "renting" girlfriends on
their winter trips home.

Equally ludicrous at first glance, this practice smells fishy and may
involve intentions far more down-to-earth than something as spiritual as
communicating one's sense of love and loss.

Vanity, an urge to please the parents, and convenience to secure a
temporary sex partner are all possible factors.

It is a good thing that all kinds of services are created to cater to the
needs of a rapidly evolving society.

This way, jobs multiply and wealth spreads. The benefits of a free market
trickle, albeit slowly, to all corners of the society.

However, there are things so personal that no assistant or machine, no
matter how scientifically trained or programmed, can substitute. "Tomb
sweeping," the Chinese term for the ceremony, is one.

That said, I have to admit that part of the service can indeed be
outsourced - the physical part, the part about removing weeds and
cleaning up the tomb.

But shouldn't that have been the job of the cemetery?

When most people talk about "sweeping their ancestral tombs," it is
metaphorical as well as literal.

Money can buy flowers, candles and incense, but money cannot buy the
remembrance one has for the lamented.

I've noticed that the travel agency say that they are taking you to
certain restautants to "avoid bad food". The food we've had has been
incredible. We've been eating from street vendors and cheap restaurants -
both of us eating plenty of food for less than 30 Yuan (2 pounds). The
restaurants are very clean, the staff never touch the food, they all wear
masks and gloves and are very conscious of hygiene - even the street
vendors. I know that there are touristy restaurants where meals are
hugely overpriced (say 500 Yuan for a meal - about 40 pounds). Basically,
you'll feel comfortable to eat anywhere in China. And you dont need to be
worried about language problems in resturants - even though almost no-one
speaks english - we have "We only eat vegetables" and "We are vegtarians"
written down in Chinese and we just show it to the waiters or food
servers and they understand. It's great.

Hu urges to carry forward revolutionary traditions

www.chinanews.cn 2007-07-28 18:14:26

(Source: Xinhua)

July 28 - Chinese President Hu Jintao on Friday called on all members of
the Communist Party of China (CPC) to carry forward the revolutionary
traditions and "bravely move forward" along the road of socialism with
Chinese characteristics.
All CPC members must get prepared for hardships and heighten their sense
of serving the people and the sense of thrift, said Hu while presiding
over a seminar of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
Two researchers, Qi Dexue and Huang Yingxu with the Academy of Military
Sciences, were invited to talk about the early revolutionary activities
of the CPC.
After listening to the lectures of the researchers, Hu reminded officials
to always oppose formalism, bureaucratism, extravagance and various forms
of corruption, to keep a sober mind and to keep resolute faith and
practical working style.
The revolutionary traditions from the hard times of the Party and nation
embody the true nature of the army, and all CPC members should serve the
people wholeheartedly and build the country with innovative efforts, the
president said.
"Our party started with unprecedented hardships and struggled to develop
with even tougher conditions," he said, inspiring all CPC members to
carry forward the "glorious revolutionary traditions" while building
China into a more modernized country.

Govnt promotes card settlement for transparency

An undated photo shows the application form for the official business
purchase card proposed by the government as part of its efforts to
improve the transparency of official consumption.

July 27 - China plans to promote the use of official business purchase
cards in public service institutions that operate on the central budget
in a bid to increase transparency of government expenses.
Working expenditure on trips, conferences, guest entertaining, and other
trivial deals less than 50,000 yuan, or 6,614 U.S. dollars, should be
paid via these cards, the China News Service reported on Thursday.
At present, certain institutions are used to withdrawing and spending
large sum of cash from the government budget, a practice which may lead
to irregularities and even corruption, the report said.
Now with this public purchase card, all payments will be traceable. The
Ministry of Finance said the cards will be used to monitor the daily
business expenses and reimbursement of expenses incurred.
Moreover, the cards reduce cash payments, thus improving control of
government money, the ministry said.
Starting on a trial basis, the cards will first be used this year by the
Central Discipline Inspection Committee of the Communist Party of China,
the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the China Soong Ching Ling
Foundation, the report said.
The cards will then be expanded to all institutes that use central
budgetary funds by the end of next year and to local institutes by 2010.

Qinghai-Tibet railway runs safely for a year

www.chinanews.cn 2007-07-12 15:52:09

Chinanews, Beijing, July 12 C A year ago, the Qinghai-Tibet railway,
also called the miraculous sky road, was put into operation. Chinese
people were excited about the news. Now, a year has passed. This sky
road has been operating safely for a whole year, experiencing the
changes of the seasons, and the transportation booms occurring during the
Spring Festival and the May Day holidays. During its operation, the
railway line has no records of accidents or human casualties. No
passengers or crew members have died of altitude sickness, the People's
Daily reported.
The Qinghai-Tibet railway was built at an average altitude of 4,000
meters, with 5,072 meters at its highest point. The high altitude, cold
weather, and lack of oxygen posed a challenge to the construction of the
railway as well as the hygiene work on the train after the construction
was completed.
In order to make sure that every passenger on the train can get timely
and effective medical services when they need, the railway department has
installed some medical equipment on the train. Medical staff are
allocated to work aboard and emergency handling schemes are in place.
On June 12-14, Vice Minister of Railways Chen Xiaohong led a team to
Tibet to check the hygiene work on the Qinghai-Tibet railway. After the
inspection, the team concluded that the medical work quality on the train
had reached the internationally advanced standards: no staff had died of
altitude sickness, no plague had occurred on the train and all sick
passengers could get timely medical services.
Ecological environment in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau remains in a primeval
state, which might be easily destroyed by human construction activities.
The plateau is the source of the Yellow River, Yangtze River, Lancang
River, Nu River, and Yarlongzangbo River. It is also the natural habitat
of a lot of endangered animal species, such as Tibetan antelopes and
Tibetan wild asses. The Qinghai-Tibet railway is built in a region where
these animals frequently appear. In order to prevent these animals from
being hurt by the passing trains, railway builders set up special animal
passageways at 33 places along the railway. Fences, warning signs and
devices that direct animals how to pass are also built in these places.
According to related information, from 2004 to 2006 more and more wild
animals tended to pass the railway zone through these animal passageways.
Tibetan antelopes have already become familiar with these newly built
man-made passageways. During the migration season, they tend to use these
passageways to run through the railway area.
The 33 animal passageways have played an important role in protecting the
animals and helping them to live together in peace, according to a report
released by the Environmental Projects Assessing Center at the State
Environmental Protection Administration.

Zhou: China might possibly raise interest rate

www.chinanews.cn 2007-06-25 17:58:25

Chinanews, Beijing, June 25 C China's cemtral bank governor Zhou
Xiaochuan said that inflation figures might further climb in the near
future, in that case, the possibility was not excluded for China to
further raise the interest rate. He predicted that economic growth might
slow down during the second quarter of this year.
He made the statement while attending an annual forum of the Bank for
International Settlements held recently in Brussels, Belgium.
The CPI figures for last May were within the range of what he expected.
We have adjusted the interest rate. However, inflation rate might climb
a bit higher now, he said.
China will allow Renminbi to exchange freely. However, this will be a
gradual process. China will make the exchange rate policy based on its
own understanding and such process will be gradual and controllable, and
with China taking the initiative, Zhou said.
He said that he was paying close attention of the development of mainland
stock market, but he was not sure whether bubbles had existed in Chinese
stock market.

On Tuesday, the China Association of Chinese Medicines Subhealth

Russia-China oil link nears completion

www.chinanews.cn 2007-06-15 09:50:23

(Source: China Daily)

June 15 - Construction of the first Russia-China oil pipeline is going
well and is expected to be completed by next year, said experts from both
countries.
The pipeline will initially supply China 10 million tons annually. It
will gradually increase to 30 million tons a year.
The feasibility of three more gas pipelines from Russia to China is also
being discussed, said Li Guoyu, an expert with the China National
Petroleum Corporation.
The three routes are:
Irkutsk to Daqing, with a projected annual gas capacity of 34 billion cu
m.
Siberia to Lunnan, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, projected length
2,800 km and an annual gas capacity 30 billion cu m.
Sakhalin to China, with annual gas capacity of 15 billion cu m.
In 2005, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that his country
would increase Russia's oil exports to Asia to 30 percent of all its oil
exports by 2020.
Putin also said that an oil pipeline, starting from the Taishet, Irkutsk,
to Nakhodka, Primorsky Krai, on the western bank of the Pacific Ocean,
would be constructed.
The 4,000-km-long pipeline would pass through Skovorodino, Amursk, which
is only 70 km from the China-Russia border.
And a sub-pipeline starting from Skovorodino would extend to Daqing, the
most important oil production base in China.
The distance from Taishet to Skovorodino is 2,284 km, and Daqing is about
870 km from Skovorodino.
"I believe the Russian government will fulfil its commitment and finish
the (700-km-long) pipeline in due time," Li said.
He said the 30 million tons of oil China will get from Russia would ease
the energy strain.
China imported about 169 million tons of oil last year, 15 million tons
were from Russia.
Last year, Russia produced 481 million tons of oil and 656.2 billion cu m
of gas, making it the top producer.
Peter Ya Baklanov, director of the Pacific Geographical Institute of the
Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said Russia plans
to build an oil refinery at Kozmino Bay, near Nakhodka, the terminus of
the oil pipeline.
The plant has a processing capacity of 20 million tons of crude oil, and
about half will be sold to Japan, China and the Republic of Korea.
