China ushers in era of 3G cooperation

www.chinanews.cn 2005-04-08 13:07:52

Chinanews, Apr.7 - After Europe-based 3G carriers reached an agreement on
China's 3G standards, US-based 3G carriers finally compromised and are
now inclined to cooperate with China's local 3G standards.
Yesterday, it was learned from the TD-SCDMA Forum that the CDMA
Development Group (CDG) representing US-based 3G carriers has been
participating in negotiations with the forum on details of cooperation.
Because of the great prospect of China's telecom market, US-based 3G
carriers, which used to keep a distance to the Chinese market, have
become more willing to make strategic compromises.
At present, there are three mainstream 3G standards, including
Europe-based WCDMA, US-based CDMA 2000 and China's local TD-SCDMA. The
GSM Association represents the interests of Europe-based 3G carriers,
while the CDG advocates for US-based service providers.
Last June, the GSM Association announced openly that it had signed a
cooperation agreement with China's TD-SCDMA to help China introduce its
technology into the international market, a milestone in the development
of China's national 3G industry.
China's national 3G standard is now undergoing a special test. From Apr.
26th to the 27th of this year, the 2005 International TD-SCDMA Summit
will be held in Beijing. The TD-SCDMA Forum is excited about a
registration rush for the summit. Many overseas carriers will be able to
see the first comprehensive demonstration of TD-SCDMA for commercial use
at the summit.
