More Chinese urban women remain single
www.chinanews.cn 2004-11-23 15:05:40
Chinanews, Nov 22 - Among the Chinese urban women in the proper age
bracket for marriage, an increasing number of them remain single, and
most are white collar workers. This large singles population has become
an urban phenomenon and is spreading throughout the country.
Census indicates that the singles population in China is growing day by
day: In 1990, more than eight million people were single in China,
compared with a staggering one million today in the cities of Beijing and
Shanghai alone.
Sociologists point out that late marriages and even no marriage for life
have become a social fact in China. Many women no longer look upon
marriage and procreation as their one and only course of life.
In the analysis of such social changes, some people attribute them to
progress. The fierce competition in todays world compels women to be
more independent and individualistic, freeing them from material
dependence on men and making it even possible to rise above male
dominance in the workplace. Though successful women may wear designer
clothes and have their own companies, houses and cars, or they may be
extremely knowledgeable or articulate, they also long for love like other
"less successful" women. But for them, love is often elusive.
