(March 11, 2005) In order to mark the 100th anniversary of the theory of
relativity and the 50th anniversary of Einstein's death, a global light
relay will be passed to China on April 19th. The light beam will circle
the globe in twenty-four hours via underground optical cables and finally
return to the United States. According to the Shanghai Association for
Science and Technology, the light beam will be in China from 7:00 pm to
9:30 pm, Beijing Time. Shanghai's Chongming is honored to be the starting
point for the Chinese length of the relay.
